Into the Pit: The Shocking Story of Deadpit.com

Into The Pittells the story of Wes Vance and Aaron Frye, two seemingly unremarkable Kentuckians who have lived in the small town of Prestonsburg their entire lives. They live in a world where family, coal, bluegrass, hunting and church are the pillars of life itself. For a couple of guys whose main interests in life are horror films, professional wrestling, and heavy metal; staving off boredom meant taking some serious and inventive measures. They needed an outlet, and in 2005 they found one, creating an Internet-based “Horror Talk Radio” show called Deadpit.com.

Four years later, their weekly audience had grown into the thousands as independent filmmaker Kelly Marcott became one of those listeners in 2007. Marcott got the idea for Into the Pit after hearing an episode in which the boys jokingly said someone should make a documentary about them. What began in jest slowly evolved into a cinematic pilgrimage as Marcott recruited fellow filmmakers Jim Bett Jr. and Natalie Milbrodt to travel into the heart of Appalachia with their cameras. They discovered a rich story of friendship, diverging dreams, blatant escapism, and childhood nostalgia set against a high contrast rural backdrop.

Aside from featuring the duo of Vance and Frye as the focus of the documentary, Bett and Marcott collaborated with executive producer William Zenobia throughout the course of production on a variety of subjects to aid the film’s success upon eventual completion. This lead to Bett and Marcott to a selection of horror themed conventions and film festivals in search of interviews with former guests of Dead Pit Radio such as Tiffany Shepis, Uwe Boll, Lloyd Kaufman, Harry Manfredini and P.J. Soles. Into the Pit: The Shocking Story of Deadpit.com was able to receive a number of awards for “Official Selection” on three separate occasions, proving the film’s potential was achieved through the hard work of Marcott, Bett, Milbrodt and William Zenobia.
