Cannibalism & Cable TV Part II: NBC names first lead role for Hannibal television series
Deadline reports that Black Hawk Down and Martha Marcy May Marlene actor Hugh Dancy has been cast as troubled FBI profiler Will Graham in NBC’s upcoming series, Hannibal. The new TV show is not a remake of the 2001 film adaptation, but instead picks up at the beginning of Graham and Dr. Hannibal Lecter’s relationship.
The last known portrayal of Will Graham’s character was in Michael Mann’s Manhunter, as portrayed by CSI star William Petersen. Several years later, Edward Norton played a less convincing and whinier version in the aforementioned 2001 movie. Does British actor Dancy have the darkness and vulnerability to pull it off? NBC is so confident in the show that the network has bypassed the pilot phase and has ordered 13 episodes up front, meaning we could see Hannibal on the small screen as early as this fall. Let us pray, for our sakes, that NBC has nothing planned for the show similar to Michael Bay’s recent description for his version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise.
